"Two Social Action Learning Communities (Education and Society and Media and Society) will enhance transfer students_ psychosocial well-being by fostering civic engagement. These programs capitalize on Purchase College_s proven excellence in serving students in transition. We will nurture students_ well-being by providing opportunities for physical, social, civic and academic engagement. Students will take two thematically related courses and an interactive course that encourages wellness. Each community will have dedicated faculty and peer mentors. Out-of-class activities will promote professional development, civic action, and community engagement. We anticipate that program students will report higher levels of civic engagement, academic success and psychosocial functioning than those in a matched control group. The Social Action Learning Communities will serve as a catalyst for change in the campus climate, making transfer student success a central issue."
