Promoting Social and Emotional Competence in First-year College Students

Category 2: Program Development Grant

"The purpose of this project is to increase the number of freshman seminar sections offered at Widener University in which the development of social and emotional competence skills is a primary instructional objective. We have shown in previous research on our campus that this seminar content promotes the development of social and emotional competence in first-year students and that this growth in emotional competence is associated with greater academic achievement. To achieve the goal of increasing the number of seminar sections with this focus on social and emotional learning (SEL), this project will pursue two objectives: 1) further standardize and _manualize_ the social and emotional learning course content, as well as its process and pedagogy, for effectively delivering the SEL seminar content; and 2) recruit faculty lacking a background in clinical skills and train them in the _process_ of effectively delivering the SEL content of these added sections of the seminar."
