"Wagner College_s First Year Program is comprised of fall semester learning communities in which 2 faculty members teach 3 courses with a cohort of 20-28 students. Each LC focuses on an integrated theme, and students are involved in experiential learning related to the theme. Previous research, supported by BTtoP, found a significant positive relationship between civic engagement and student well-being: students whose LCs involved service learning reported higher levels of social, emotional, and psychological well-being than peers whose LCs involved field experience but no service. Many students become civically engaged through their LC coursework but significantly fewer remain engaged during their second semester and into subsequent years. This proposal will fund initiatives for students, faculty, and administrators to strengthen civic engagement with Wagner_s neighboring Port Richmond community beyond the FYP, and to align efforts across curricular and co-curricular areas on campus."
